How to manipulate dies

When dies are not mounted on a support, they must be handled carefully, using tweezers.

Preventing scratches

Although it’s tempting to use the same metal tweezers as those used for electronics, this should really be avoided.

Even when handled carefully, you can easily scratch the die, break the corners or chip the edges.

Cardboard tweezers

It’s currently my preferred method.

It’s almost free, efficient, and easy to do.

I was able to use just one for months. If the tip is damaged, just cut it off.

With cardboard tweezers, you simply cannot scratch or damage a die. They are too soft.

Make yours

I use small coardboard tickets. Just make sure your cardboard doesn’t generate dust like some recycled ones.

Cut a small band to create the body. Make it wide enough, something like 8mm.

Cut another band of the same width and create the spring.

I use double tape adhesive to glue them. Make sure the spring is near the top.

If the two sides are not aligned, cut off the excess.

Once finished, cut the end slightly at an angle.

Carbon fiber tweezers

The most professional way (cleanrooms[1]) is to use carbon fiber tweezers.

Fragile and expensive, you probably don’t need them if all you’re doing is manipulating dies.
